Why Bulls guard Lonzo Ball ‘dodged a bullet’ with wrist injury

Lonzo Ball’s wrist injury, which he sustained early in the 2024-2025 season during a game against the Memphis Grizzlies, was initially alarming given his recent history of lengthy injuries. However, the Chicago Bulls see his current setback as a fortunate outcome under the circumstances. The injury, a right wrist sprain, was diagnosed as being between a Grade 1 and 2 sprain. By taking a cautious approach with rest and avoiding further activity, Ball was able to prevent a more severe Grade 3 sprain that would have likely required surgery and caused another prolonged absence. Head coach Billy Donovan compared the situation to past severe wrist injuries among other players, emphasizing that early intervention spared Ball a potentially devastating outcome.

The injury pause is another setback for Ball after two years away due to knee problems, but it also allows a better chance for him to heal fully and preserve his promising return. The Bulls hope his rest strategy will expedite his recovery without the need for invasive measures.

Lonzo Ball of the Chicago Bulls “dodged a bullet” with a recent wrist injury that initially caused significant concern. Diagnosed with a mild sprain, Ball avoided what could have become a more severe injury requiring surgery, reminiscent of setbacks other players have faced. After having missed two full NBA seasons due to knee complications, Ball’s return to action this season was closely monitored. Unfortunately, he suffered the wrist issue just a few games into his comeback.

The Bulls’ coaching staff, led by Billy Donovan, opted for rest and precautionary measures, thereby sparing Ball from risking greater damage by playing through the pain. Comparisons were made to past injuries that ended seasons prematurely for teammates, emphasizing that Ball’s quick intervention was crucial. Though frustrating, the setback is viewed as a necessary pause to protect his long-term health and playing prospects. Ball’s resilience in overcoming past injuries and the cautious approach are giving hope to both the player and fans for a more sustainable return to form.
