Smart confirmed that Beck underwent successful surgery on his right elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament and will miss the College Football Playoff (CFP).
With Beck sidelined, redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton is set to start in the upcoming Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame. Smart expressed confidence in Stockton’s preparation, noting that the additional practice time during the bye week has been beneficial. He stated, “He’s been a great competitor… It’s been good to see him get reps and grow as a player.”
Smart emphasized the importance of maintaining the team’s offensive identity despite the quarterback change. He remarked, “We got to run our offense… We got 10 other players with the top of the quarterback… The system that we run is get it to our playmakers.”
