Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck is expected to miss the College Football Playoff (CFP) quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl on January 1, 2025, due to an elbow injury sustained during the SEC Championship game against Texas.
Beck, who has been Georgia’s starting quarterback throughout the season, injured his throwing elbow late in the first half of the SEC title game. Backup quarterback Gunner Stockton replaced him in the second half, completing 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards, despite an interception, and led the Bulldogs to a 22-19 overtime victory.
Since the injury, Beck has been absent from team practices, and there is uncertainty regarding his availability for potential future playoff games. Reports indicate that Beck is exploring surgical options, which could sideline him for the remainder of the season.
In Beck’s absence, redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton is expected to start in the Sugar Bowl. Stockton has demonstrated competence in his limited appearances this season, completing 25 of 32 passes for 206 yards and one interception. Head coach Kirby Smart has expressed confidence in Stockton’s readiness to lead the team, stating, “This kid is a winner. This kid is special.”
Georgia, aiming for its third national championship in four years, will face the winner of the Notre Dame and Indiana matchup in the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs secured a first-round bye in the inaugural 12-team playoff, providing additional time to prepare for the upcoming challenge.
