Former Georgia WR Ladd McConkey sets multiple franchise records

In a standout performance on December 28, 2024, former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Ladd McConkey set new franchise rookie records for the Los Angeles Chargers during their 40-7 victory over the New England Patriots. McConkey recorded eight receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his season totals to 77 catches for 1,054 yards. This achievement surpasses the previous rookie records held by Keenan Allen, who had 71 receptions for 1,046 yards in 2013.

McConkey’s exceptional performance has drawn praise from teammates and coaches alike. Quarterback Justin Herbert commented, “He’s such a tough player. He’s a playmaker and finds ways to get open… He’s a guy we trust on third down.” Safety Derwin James Jr. added, “Ladd is that guy… He’s a baller, man.”

Selected 34th overall by the Chargers in the 2024 NFL Draft, McConkey has made an immediate impact in his rookie season. His contributions have been instrumental in the Chargers securing a playoff berth, turning around from a five-win season last year to a postseason contender.

With one regular-season game remaining against the Las Vegas Raiders, McConkey has the opportunity to further extend his rookie records. Additionally, he is within reach of breaking into the top 10 for receiving yards among rookie receivers in NFL history, needing 84 yards to surpass Michael Thomas’s 1,137-yard mark.

McConkey’s rapid development and record-setting performances underscore his significant potential and the value he brings to the Chargers’ offense. As the team prepares for the playoffs, his role will be crucial in their pursuit of postseason success.
