ESPN Ranks the Top 10 College Football Playoff Teams of All Time

In a special feature leading up to this year’s College Football Playoff (CFP), ESPN unveiled its list of the top 10 CFP teams of all time, showcasing the best squads to ever compete in the postseason era. The rankings were compiled by a panel of experts, who took into account overall dominance, talent level, and championship success.

At the top of the list, ESPN placed the 2019 LSU Tigers, led by Heisman winner Joe Burrow. This team was explosive offensively, breaking numerous records, including scoring 726 points and defeating multiple top-ranked teams, including Alabama and Clemson, on their way to a national title. LSU’s offense, coupled with a defense that stepped up when needed, made them a consensus choice for the number one spot.

Following LSU were the 2020 Alabama Crimson Tide, another juggernaut under Nick Saban. With Heisman winner Devonta Smith, a dynamic quarterback in Mac Jones, and a powerful defense, Alabama went undefeated and cruised to a championship, dominating Ohio State in the title game. Their near-perfect season placed them firmly in second on the list.

Other teams making the top 10 include the 2018 Clemson Tigers, who dominated Notre Dame and Alabama in the playoff to claim their second title in three years, and the 2021 Georgia Bulldogs, who snapped a 41-year national title drought with a dominant win over Alabama in the championship game.

The list also features perennial powerhouses such as the 2017 Georgia Bulldogs, 2014 Ohio State Buckeyes, and 2015 Alabama Crimson Tide, each of which made a significant impact during their respective playoff runs.

As college football continues to evolve, these teams remain the gold standard in the playoff era, showcasing the best of what the sport has to offer.
