ESPN FPI Predicts One-Sided Game in College Football Playoff Quarterfinal

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) forecasts a decisive victory for the Texas Longhorns over the Arizona State Sun Devils in the upcoming College Football Playoff quarterfinals. The FPI assigns Texas a commanding 79.7% chance of winning, leaving Arizona State with a 20.3% probability of advancing.

The Longhorns, boasting an 11-2 record, have demonstrated exceptional balance this season. Their defense ranks second nationally, allowing just 13.3 points per game, while their offense has accumulated the third-highest total yardage in the country, amassing 6,284 yards.

In contrast, the Sun Devils also hold an 11-2 record but have experienced defeats against teams like Texas Tech (8-4) and Cincinnati (5-7). Their offensive strategy heavily relies on running back Cam Skattebo. If Texas’s formidable defense can contain Skattebo’s impact, Arizona State may face significant challenges.

The matchup is scheduled for January 1, 2025, at 1 p.m. ET. According to ESPN BET, Texas enters the game as a 13.5-point favorite.

This quarterfinal is part of a series of anticipated matchups, including No. 7 Notre Dame versus No. 2 Georgia, No. 6 Penn State against No. 3 Boise State, and No. 8 Ohio State facing No. 1 Oregon.

The College Football Playoff structure continues to generate excitement, with fans eagerly awaiting the outcomes of these pivotal games. The winners of the semifinal matchups will advance to the National Championship Game in Houston on January 8.
