Jonathan Pascual, a Filipino-American nurse practitioner battling Stage 4 cancer, recently showcased incredible determination by completing the grueling Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Diagnosed in 2022 with mediastinal paraganglioma, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting his lungs and bones, Pascual has used endurance sports as a means to confront life’s challenges.
The Ironman competition required Pascual to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and complete a full 26.2-mile marathon. Despite experiencing severe physical limitations, including shortness of breath and chronic pain, he persevered. Notably, Pascual had to adjust his swimming technique mid-race due to difficulties caused by his tumor affecting blood flow.
This milestone marked his 16th Ironman finish and was dedicated to inspiring cancer patients to live fully. Pascual credits his journey to the unwavering support of his family and friends. He emphasized the importance of resilience and positivity, encouraging others to seek help when needed and to spread kindness
