“Mac is capable of doing it; the question is whether we want to use him that way,” Campbell stated. “He can handle it, but the consideration is how much energy he has left after a long drive. If he just played a 10-play drive, can he still go out as a fullback at full speed? We’ve discussed it, so you never know, we might put him in that role.”
While many teams are moving away from using a traditional fullback as the league shifts to a more spread-out offense, Campbell emphasized that the position remains essential in Detroit’s scheme.
“We value a fullback if it makes sense and if we know the player can contribute at that position and influence the defense,” Campbell clarified. “The goal is to make the defense respond in a way we want. But we won’t force it if it doesn’t fit.”
