For Swayman, who will be a restricted free agent and is once again eligible for arbitration (which the Bruins want to avoid), Sweeney emphasized that securing a deal with him is the team’s top priority this summer.
“It’s clearly a priority, and Jeremy [Swayman] knows that. I told him, he took us to arbitration just for clarity,” Sweeney said about the Swayman extension and last year’s negotiations, which both sides have frequently mentioned. “Again, that’s part of it. It’s similar to the situation with Trent Frederic. Sometimes these things happen, and it doesn’t mean we didn’t believe in Jeremy Swayman or see him as part of our future.”
Sweeney also confirmed earlier reports that the Bruins and Swayman had begun extension talks, with the possibility of a substantial deal for Swayman.
