Former World Number 1, Carlos Alcaraz, didn’t have a great ending to the 2023 season. After winning the Wimbledon title, much was expected of him. However, he failed to defend his US Open title and had a disappointing run in other tournaments. Further, even before the start of the current season, he received a major setback. It was about a concerning situation regarding his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero. However, Alcaraz has found a familiar face to back him Down Under.

Ferrero is a long-time coach of Alcaraz and is often present at the tournaments. However, he revealed that he’s not going to be with Alcaraz for the ongoing Australian Open due to problems with his knee.

Juan Carlos Ferrero had an arthroscopy on his left knee in December last year. Recovery from this surgery takes time and he will be on crutches for a few weeks. As a result, he announced that he’s not going to travel with Alcaraz at the Australian Open

In Ferrero’s absence, Alcaraz is being coached by Samuel Lopez. Interestingly, Lopez had worked with Alcaraz last season as well when Ferrero was absent. Their partnership got off to a winning start as Alcaraz won the Queen’s Club title.

While Alcaraz has admitted that it is difficult not having Ferrero with him, Lopez has the full trust of the Spaniard. Talking about Lopez, Alcaraz said, “I have Sam with me, who is a great coach as well. He was the coach of Juan Carlos when he was playing. I trust him. I believe in him.”

Further reiterating his trust, Alcaraz added, “I think I can learn a lot from him. Let’s see how it is going to be. I trust him 100 per cent.” Although Ferrero announced his absence from the Spaniard’s team, he went on to pay a fitting tribute to Alcaraz.

Ferrero’s wonderful gesture for Alcaraz

The two have been working together for a long time since Alcaraz began his professional journey. It was the year 2019 when Alcaraz was just 16 years old. Fast forward to now, he already has a couple of Grand Slam titles and has scaled to the top of the ATP rankings last year. As a result, Ferrero announced a wonderful honor for Alcaraz.

Ferrero named a tennis court after Alcaraz at his academy. It was an amazing gesture by Ferrero, who acknowledged Alcaraz’s achievements in the most perfect way.

At just 20, Alcaraz continues to impress one and all. He has reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and will take on Miomir Kecmanović next. It’ll be interesting to see if Alcaraz can attain glory Down Under.
