NEW DELHI: The Denver Broncos announced on Monday the release of veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, bringing an end to a tumultuous chapter in NFL history. Wilson’s departure comes just two years after he joined the team in a high-profile trade from the Seattle Seahawks.
“Today, we informed Russell Wilson of his release as we begin the new league year,” stated Broncos general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton in a joint statement.
“We appreciate Russell’s contributions and commitment to our team and community and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
Looking ahead, the Broncos emphasized their focus on building a strong team for the 2024 season and beyond. They expressed excitement about improving through the draft and free agency.
Wilson’s departure will come with financial implications for the Broncos, who reportedly owe him $85 million over the next two seasons. By releasing him, the team avoids paying an additional $37 million in guaranteed money from his contract signed in 2022.
Reflecting on his time with the Broncos, Wilson expressed gratitude to the organization and the Denver community, stating, “The city will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Seahawks, was initially seen as a solution to Denver’s quarterback issues. However, his tenure with the Broncos did not meet expectations.
In his debut season, Wilson struggled as the Broncos finished with a 5-12 record. Head coach Nathaniel Hackett was fired after a lopsided loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Wilson faced significant pressure, being sacked 55 times and tallying just 16 touchdowns.
Although Wilson performed better under coach Payton in 2023, uncertainties about his future persisted. He was eventually benched for the final two games of the regular season, marking the end of his stint with the Broncos
